Improving nurseries sustainability

The project for the Transfer of Knowledge to Enterprises (TRACE), developed by IRTA institute, performed tests to obtain improvements in nurseries sustainability regarding the use of native substrates alternative to the usual ones and regarding the optimization and efficient use of water using objective management systems and automatic irrigation, in collaboration with the Catalan Federation of Nurseries and Girona growers.

The Girona Association of Nurseries and the companies Vivers de Cardedeu, Jardineria i Vivers Sant Iscle, Vivers Massaneda, Centre de Jardineria Sils, Vivers Tortadès, Vivers Bosch, Juniper Inmocat and Cultius Brugat have exhibited in the Salon du Végétal in Angers, the most important fair of the nursery sector in France, from the 21st to the 23rd of February 2012.

The Catalan zone was part of the joint participation of Spanish companies coordinated by FEPEX with the collaboration of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment and ICEX.

At Girona Nurseries Association booth, shared with Catalan Nurseries Association, professional visitors found the Guide of Girona Nurseries and commercial information of nurseries de Vivers Planas, Cultius Mas Cuní, Vivers Borda, Starplant, Vivers Taberner i Vivers Casa Paraire.

Seven nurseries and Girona Association of Nurseries have exhibited at the IPM trade fair in Essen (Germany)

Vivers Tortadès, Vivers Massaneda, Centre de Jardineria Sils, Vivers Planas Celrà, Vivers Planas Púbol, Jardineria i Vivers Sant Iscle, Vivers Borda and the Association have exhibited at the IPM trade show in Essen (Germany), the most important fair of the nursery sector in Europe.

Since the 24th until the 27th January 2012 they have shown to European buyers the plants produced in their nurseries:

Vivers Tortadès, from Sant Hilari Sacalm, is specialized in the production of conifers, with a vast range of container grown varieties.

Vivers Massaneda, from Santa Coloma de Farners, is a big nursery producing container grown shrubs and conifers.

Centre de Jardineria Sils, from Sils, grows mainly trees in container and big specimens.

Vivers Planas Celrà, from Celrà, is specialized in the production of ornamental trees.

Vivers Planas Púbol, from Púbol - la Pera, produces large specimens of conifers.

Jardineria i Vivers Sant Iscle, from Sant Feliu de Pallerols, produces large specimens of Mediterranean trees like Quercus ilex, Arbutus unedo and Quercus suber.

Vivers Borda, the newest member of the association, produces ornamental trees mainly.

Their stands, together with another Catalan company and Girona Association of Nurseries that was exhibiting with the

Catalan Federation of Nurseries, were part of the joint participation of Spanish companies coordinated by FEPEX with the collaboration of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment and ICEX.

At Girona Nurseries Association booth, professional visitors found the Guide of Girona Nurseries and information about FÒRUM VERD (GREEN FORUM), the trade fair to be held in Girona (15^th – 16^th February 2012), and additional commercial information of nurseries VIVERS PLANAS, Cultius Miralpeix Bosch, Can Jover Cultius, Vivers de Cardedeu, Monerplant, Plantació i Jardineria Sacalm, CULTIUS MAS CUNÍ and VIVERS CASA PARAIRE.

The trade show journal showed the efforts of one of our nurserymen trying to fit a cypress into his stand.

Girona region is leader in plant production.

Catalonia is the region of Spain with the largest surface used on production of ornamental plants, being the province of Girona the absolute leader.

According to the statistical yearbook published by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, 4725.25 ha are used by nurseries in Spain; among them 1600.40 ha are located in Catalonia (34%) of which 1105 ha belong to the Girona province, almost a quarter of the total Spanish nursery fields.

European quality standards for nurserystock

The European Nurserystock Association launched the revised and completed European minimum quality standards for nurserystock.

The European Nursery Stock Association (ENA) had their ENA Committee Meeting in connection with the IPM-show in Essen 29th January 2010. ENA presented their reviewed and completed ENA Quality Standards. For the past ten years ENA kept on leading the charge to have uniform quality standards accepted and implemented across the European nurserystock sector. These standards are a synthesis of work, carried out in 1990, early 1996 and 2009. These ENA Quality Standards are now the accepted minimum plant standards used between ENA-member states. They are obviously, constantly evolving and therefore likely to be reviewed and completed.

ENA is convinced that one of the surest ways to develop the nursery market in Europe is to make trading easier within the EU. ENA decided to take on the task of establishing simple, universally acknowledged European standards. The idea behind all this is to define a common language for a standard, fair, honest, average quality. It will be up to individual businesses to apply their own more rigorous standards, using these as a basis, should they wish to do so.

To get more visibility, ENA has created a new logo and website (www.enaplants.eu). Within this website it is possible to download easily the ENA Quality Standards!

Natural Christmas trees

Having a Christmas tree at home is a pleasure, furthermore if a few simple tips to keep it fresh are followed. Christmas trees are a natural product grown in nurseries, under state regulations, which besides being respectful of the environment and help to fix the territory population also contributes to counteract the effect of climate change.

Characteristics of the Christmas trees culture:

• Christmas trees are not removed from the forest, are grown, so deforestation is not generated.
• Are grown under control and regulated in most countries.
• It is not subsidized farming, it costs the taxpayers nothing.
• Xmas trees are grown in rural regions; the alternative would be the abandonment of land, which would contribute to desertification and people emigration.
• It’s a culture respectful with the environment, almost organic.
• They don’t need the amounts of chemical treatments or fertilizers that intensive crops require.
• The farmland in wooded areas makes firewalls and makes the forest more accessible if fire fighting is necessary.
• The nursery-grown Christmas trees consume CO2 contributing to reduce the greenhouse effect.
• Christmas trees growing in the nursery generate oxygen; every hectare of Christmas trees daily produces the oxygen for 40 people.

Natural Xmas trees are better than artificial because:

- Do not pollute in the manufacturing process
- They are a renewable resource, 100% recyclable: they go back to nature and do not generate waste (they return converted into compost, an organic product that serves to improve the fertility of parks and gardens).
- They are not toxic (the plastic trees contain non-biodegradable plastic).
- They are much more beautiful.
- They smell well.
- All of them are unique and different, there aren’t two equal specimens.
- They come in all sizes.
- There are different varieties (different colors, different ports), allowing you to choose according to your preferences.
- They are handmade produced.
- We employ people here (more than 85% of the artificial Xmas trees are produced in China).
- Being produced in Europe the energy consumed in their transport is also much lower.
- They are sold with practically no packaging so they don’t generate urban waste.
- Natural trees are grown in a few years, a plastic tree requires 10.000 years!

Tips to keep your Christmas tree fresh:

• Choose a fresh tree.
• place it away from the fireplace, away from radiators or hot air vents.
• Water it daily, and better if before decorating it had spent some hours with the roots into a bucket of water.
